Well, today was the big day. Can you tell from this picture what it is? Me neither. Well, I can tell it's a baby! Good thing we got a better look than this. We saw the baby sucking its thumb a lot and doing lots of stretching, kicking, arching, moving, etc. After all the measurements were taken and body parts located, examined, and measured, the technician focused in on the really important part! I'm terrible at reading ultrasounds so I said, "Oh, is it a boy?" but Ruel said right away, "No, it's a girl." He was right. Sure enough, to my absolute and total surprise, it is a girl. Even though I have had several random dreams about having a girl, I think that I always thought I would have two boys and two girls, so I still can't quite wrap my mind around it. My first thoughts: 1) We only have 3 bedrooms; what are we going to do? 2) I can't believe I let Ruel pick that dark blue paint for Andrew's bedroom...... and I was going to decorate it in trains or planes. 3) We better call the architect! :)
I went to pick the kids up from my friend's house afterwards. When I walked in, before I told them, they all guessed what they thought it was and everyone including my friend and her kids said it was a boy. They were all as surprised as me. I was curious if I could get Andrew to accept or understand that it was just one baby and not twins like he still tells everybody. I went over to where he was playing and told him there was just one baby and it is a girl. Without skipping a beat he just said, "No, it's twins" and went back to playing! Too funny. Well, I saw with my own eyes and had the technician double check and there is definitely just one baby!
When I got the kids in the car and started driving home, I said again how surprised I was and Emily immediately said to me (as she has been told by teachers), "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit!" Well said, Emily. I feel badly that Andrew won't have a brother, but I definitely don't want to throw a fit! I'm excited about all the cute little girl dresses that I can get out again and lots of other fun things. The night we told the kids about the baby a few weeks ago, the girls were so ecstatic and couldn't stop talking about it. I overheard them while they were in the bathroom brushing their teeth. Emily starting making up and singing a song about the baby having a smile like hers. It was so cute. They will be great big sisters. And maybe one boy is enough.......especially after a day like today when Andrew hit another boy at preschool in the forehead with a train and made him bleed. Yeah, one boy is enough.
